Commanders face more questions than offensive line ahead of 2026 season

The 2026 Washington Commanders have generated more questions than their offensive line heading into the season. After a period of uncertainty, optimism grew when the team signed Stefon Diggs, a four-time Pro Bowl wideout, and bolstered Daniels' receiving corps. However, the arrival of Diggs was overshadowed by an injury to left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who tore his triceps.

Tunsil was crucial in protecting Daniels, and his absence poses a significant challenge. To replace Tunsil, Washington moved Brandon Coleman back to the left tackle position. Coleman, while not Tunsil's equal, is still a competent player and better than several other left tackles in the league. Unfortunately, moving Coleman meant he was no longer available for the left guard competition, which he was expected to win.

Additionally, new center Nick Allegretti missed most of training camp, and analysts are questioning whether Washington did enough at the center position. Journeyman Julian Good-Jones and rookie Matt Gulbin have taken turns at center, struggling to find their footing, with Good-Jones being cut and Gulbin one snap away from taking over the role.

Analysts predict the Commanders might finish last in the NFC East. Despite the offensive line concerns, the biggest change this offseason is the offensive philosophy shift brought in by new coordinators David Blough and Daronte Jones. The Commanders' approach is different, with more complex schemes. The challenge now lies in integrating some of the old players into the new system, particularly quarterback Jayden Daniels.

Tunsil's absence and the new offensive schemes will significantly impact the team's performance, especially during the Commanders' challenging opening stretch of the season against NFC East rivals.
