Chandrashekhar Shilpi remembered for contribution to traditional sculpture

M.C. Ramesh, president of the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy, presided over a condolence and tribute meeting held at Rangayana in Kalaburagi to remember the late sculptor, Chandrashekhar Y. Shilpi. The meeting was organized by the Department of Kannada and Culture and the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy. Ramesh emphasized on identifying and nurturing artistic talent at an early age, urging the setting up of a conducive environment to do so. He also proposed publishing a book documenting Shilpi's life and works.

Shivanand Bantanur, an assistant professor at the Central University of Karnataka, described Shilpi as one of the outstanding contributions of Kalyana Karnataka to sculpture. Bantanur highlighted that artists from the region had been instrumental in sculptural development throughout the centuries, and Shilpi's work could still be seen in various historical structures, including temples, forts, and other historical sites.

Shilpi was particularly known for his horse sculptures, which showcased vitality and movement. Bantanur also revealed that two craftsmen from Scotland had resided with Shilpi for months to learn his craft.

Baburao Yadrami, the district president of the Karnataka Working Journalists' Association, suggested establishing an award in Shilpi's name and urged the government to build a permanent museum in Kalaburagi to display his works and serve as a sculpture training center. Senior artist Chandrahasa Jalihaal mentioned that Shilpi had extensively studied Shilpa Shastra principles and incorporated them into his works.

Despite being a highly accomplished artist, he led a simple and unassuming life, never seeking awards or recognition. Ajendra Mahaswamy of Ekadandimath, Shahapur, mentioned Shilpi's rise from his small village of Kakkeri in Yadgir district to becoming a highly accomplished craftsman. He noted that Shilpi's work received national recognition, with President Droupadi Murmu honoring him with a National Master Craftsman Award.

Shilpi's daughter and sculptor, Gayatri Shilpi, shared memories of her father, emphasizing patience, dedication, and hard work as the keys to his success.
