Canadian rescued after yacht found submerged in remote part of Indian Ocean

A Canadian tourist found himself in good health after his yacht was discovered partially submerged in a remote area of the Indian Ocean. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) reported that the man was traveling from Darwin, Australia's northernmost point, to Christmas Island, an Australian territory situated south of Jakarta, Indonesia.

According to an AMSA news release, the yachtsman failed to check in with his family in Canada twice on Sunday, prompting his brother to contact Australian authorities. It was discovered that the partially submerged catamaran was located roughly 1,000 kilometers east-southeast of Christmas Island, and the man was found in the vessel’s dinghy, or tender.

An air rescue helicopter provided life-saving supplies, including a life raft, emergency beacon, food, and water, to the man before he was transferred to a Royal Australian Navy helicopter. Alex Barrell of AMSA emphasized the importance of being well-prepared before setting sail, stating that this incident highlights how swiftly circumstances can deteriorate offshore.

Dan Gillis, the manager of the AMSA Rescue Coordination Centre in Canberra, mentioned in a video statement that the sailor was in good condition and was to be taken back to Darwin, Australia. Gillis added that severe weather had been reported in the area where the vessel was last seen.
