Can new defense minister nominee's US ties help navigate alliance challenges?

Defense minister nominee Kang Shin-chul is making waves due to his extensive military background and his close collaboration with U.S. commanders. Specifically, he has worked closely with Gen. Xavier Brunson, who leads the Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command (CFC) and the U.S. Forces Korea. Those who have worked with Kang praise his ability to understand the mindset of the U.S. military and his inclination towards coordination rather than asserting his own agenda.

This expertise could prove invaluable as South Korea and the United States navigate sensitive discussions surrounding the transition of wartime operational control (OPCON) and joint military exercises. Kang and Brunson served together at the CFC for approximately nine months, from December 2024 when Brunson arrived in Korea until Kang resigned as deputy commander in September 2025.

Their professional relationship and mutual respect became clear when Brunson expressed his gratitude on social media platform X upon Kang's departure. He acknowledged that "Our forces are more cohesive, capable & prepared because of you," adding that he had become a "better Commander for your example of meeting expectations."
