In a recent development in German federal politics, a substantial majority of the Bundesversammlung, the country's federal parliament, supports the Black-Red coalition comprising the Social Democratic Party (SPD), the Free Democratic Party (FDP), and the Alliance 90/The Greens. This coalition, which recently secured a significant victory in the state of Sachsen-Anhalt, will select a new head of state on January 30.

Armand Zorn, the SPD faction deputy, expressed concern about the potential expansion of Emirates' start and landing opportunities at German airports. He stressed the importance of thoroughly examining the conditions under which competition operates and the impacts on businesses and employees. Zorn's comments come in the wake of an upcoming state visit by the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed.

The CDU, CSU, and SPD, along with the FDP and the Greens, now hold a clear majority in the Bundestag. According to calculations by the "wahlrecht.de" platform, the three coalition partners together hold between 685 and 687 seats, surpassing the 631 votes needed for the election. Even if the electoral outcomes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin, which have lower turnout rates, change, the coalition's position remains secure.

Both states have already been allocated a fixed number of representatives in the calculations based on the latest prognoses from the Infratest dimap institute.

In response to the election results in Sachsen-Anhalt, SPD General Secretary Tim Klüssendorf questioned the responsibility of the federal government and its supporting parties. He emphasized that many people are now uncertain about various aspects, including pensions, care, healthcare, and fuel prices. The Innenausschuss of the Bundestages will address the hybrid threat posed by Russia in a special session, with the government's report on the hybrid threat landscape and planned countermeasures being the sole agenda item for Thursday's meeting.
