Benue Links intercepts 238 trafficked persons

Transport giant Benue Links Nigeria Limited has rescued and returned a staggering 238 individuals potentially ensnared in human trafficking, according to company officials. Speaking to reporters, General Manager Alexander Fanafa shed light on the company's proactive stance against trafficking, revealing that their interventions have already led to the arrest of numerous suspects in connection with trafficking activities.

Fanafa emphasised that the company has bolstered its monitoring system by deploying officers at key terminals and training security personnel to identify suspicious activities, especially those involving children. He explained that any adult travelling with children bearing different surnames triggers heightened scrutiny, prompting further investigation to determine their relationship, destination, and purpose of travel.

This meticulous approach has resulted in the rescue of a multitude of individuals who were deceived into travelling under false pretenses, often only to discover they had been trafficked.

The company's commitment to combating human trafficking extends beyond interception; Benue Links is also dedicated to facilitating the return and rehabilitation of rescued victims. Governor Hyacinth Alia has directed the company to provide free transportation for genuine trafficking survivors returning home, ensuring that victims from across the nation, not just residents of Benue, can benefit from this humanitarian gesture.

Fanafa elaborated on a recent case where 11 victims were rescued in Benin and successfully returned to their families, as well as another instance involving approximately 15 victims rescued in Lagos. He stressed that Benue Links does not merely transport victims but also ensures they receive necessary support, including referral to relevant agencies for rehabilitation, counselling, and reintegration into society.

Fanafa highlighted that many trafficking victims are often deceived with promises of better employment, education, or living conditions, only to find themselves in dire situations. Some victims have even had their mobile phones confiscated upon arrival, restricting their freedom of movement. He stressed that Benue Links' rescue efforts have provided invaluable insights into the tactics employed by traffickers, allowing law enforcement to better understand and combat these criminal networks.

Additionally, the company has been actively engaged in raising awareness about human trafficking and irregular migration among immigration officials, security personnel, and the general public, through regular visits to company terminals. Fanafa urged the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities, assuring that Benue Links remains steadfast in its mission to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent further instances of human trafficking.
