Baker Mayfield, the Buccaneers' quarterback, and the team have reached an agreement on a contract extension, according to two sources cited by Front Office Sports on Tuesday. The deal is for three years and valued at $165 million, which was confirmed by the team without disclosing the financial details. This extension secures Mayfield, who is 31 years old, until the 2029 season.

Mayfield had previously been under a three-year, $100 million contract and would have entered unrestricted free agency next year. Owner Joel Glazer expressed his appreciation for Mayfield's leadership, stating that the new deal reflects the organization's belief in the quarterback and his impact both on and off the field. The extension was reached after initial offers were deemed unsatisfactory by Mayfield, who felt disrespected and undervalued by the team.

Despite this, the two sides continued to negotiate, and the agreement was finalized after the start of training camp. Mayfield has been a two-time Pro Bowl selection in his three seasons with the Buccaneers and was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Browns. General Manager Jason Licht praised Mayfield's preparation, competition, and performance in crucial moments, emphasizing that he is the heartbeat of the team.
