Australians sleep at Heathrow after UK air traffic control failure

Australian travellers have been stranded at one of the world's busiest airports, London Heathrow, following a failure in UK air traffic control. The disruption caused hundreds of flights to be cancelled and tens of thousands of passengers to face delays. The issue originated from a fault in the flight data processing system operated by National Air Traffic Services (NATS), the UK's air traffic control provider.

Monique Whiting, a Perth woman, and her partner Frank were forced to sleep on the floor at Heathrow after their flight to Iceland was cancelled. They were informed that the flight would not depart, and despite being provided with snacks and water, they were left without accommodation options nearby. Debbie Payne, a woman on a European holiday, had been in London for four days when she arrived at Heathrow for a flight home to Australia.

She faced a chaotic situation with security checks delayed and some passengers stranded on aircraft due to a lack of ramps. Both Whiting and Payne expressed frustration over the lack of suitable accommodation and the inability to sleep at the airport.
