Argentina files lawsuit against oil firms operating off Malvinas

The Argentine government has imposed sanctions on 15 entities operating in the vicinity of the Malvinas Islands, located in the South Atlantic. These measures follow previous action taken against 45 other parties, targeting both individuals and legal entities. The government asserts that these actions are necessary to protect Argentina's sovereignty over the Malvinas, South Georgia, and the South Sandwich Islands, as well as the surrounding maritime and island zones.

Argentina maintains that these territories are rightfully theirs and that no foreign party may exploit their resources without the nation's consent. This stance was underscored when Argentina filed a criminal lawsuit against five oil and gas exploration firms associated with Navitas Petroleum, the Israeli-led Sea Lion oil drilling project situated in the North Malvinas Basin. The project, which could yield over 300 million barrels of oil over three decades, involves British partner Rockhopper Exploration.

The sanctions extend to stakeholders, investors, service providers, and other firms connected to the Sea Lion project and its operators. While the UK refers to the islands as the "Falkland Islands," Argentina insists on the term "Malvinas."
