Anwar warns ministries against blank cheque approach while Malaysia grapples with subsidy burden

Malaysia's Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has cautioned against the government's practice of providing blank cheques to ministries, warning of the unsustainable trajectory of public spending while grappling with the financial burden of subsidies. During the Plantation and Commodities Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar emphasized the necessity for fiscal discipline, asserting that the government cannot indefinitely expand allocations to address every crisis without considering the long-term viability of such a model.

He highlighted that the country has already allocated RM40 billion in subsidies, a significant sum that calls for greater accountability in expenditure management. Anwar stressed that the government's commitment should be towards ensuring that public spending yields tangible benefits for the populace rather than merely inflating budget figures year after year.

The PM's remarks come at a time when some ministries are seeking increased allocations, placing additional strain on the government's already stretched fiscal resources. Despite this fiscal pressure, Anwar recently announced the expansion of the Budi Madani RON95 programme, increasing the monthly subsidy from 200 to 300 litres to support over 16 million users.

He acknowledged the ongoing struggles of many Malaysians with the rising cost of living, acknowledging that the government is not yet satisfied with the current solutions and that further steps are needed to alleviate household pressures. These issues are likely to be at the forefront of the Budget 2027 deliberations, as the administration grapples with the delicate balance between providing targeted assistance and maintaining a stable fiscal position.
