Air traffic control issue disrupts flights at major UK airports

Nearly a thousand flights were disrupted across major British airports on Tuesday (Sep 8) due to a technical fault at air traffic control provider NATS. This incident is reminiscent of a similar failure three years ago that caused even more widespread disruption. As passengers awaited updates in departure halls nationwide, airlines questioned whether Britain's air traffic control system was fit for purpose.

NATS stated that the issue with its flight data processing system had been resolved at 1934 BST, though recovery took longer than anticipated. The company's CEO, Martin Rolfe, admitted that the investigation into the technical fault had not yet identified its exact cause. Hundreds of flights were delayed or cancelled, with close to 500 departures affected at airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick, London City, Luton, Edinburgh, and Bristol.

British Airways experienced the most significant impact, cancelling 16 of its 333 scheduled departures. Aviation analyst John Strickland warned that even a short outage can have severe consequences due to the cascading delays in tightly scheduled airline networks. Wizz Air called for urgent reform of NATS, arguing that recurring system failures render the provider unfit for purpose.

Britain's aviation regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority, stated that it would expect NATS to share a full report on Tuesday's incident and consider further steps to improve the reliability of the UK's air traffic control system.
