9/11 terrorist attacks: lessons and reflections

Twenty-five years have elapsed since the catastrophic, shocking terrorist assaults of September 11, 2001. This significant milestone presents an opportune moment to contemplate and scrutinize the lessons derived from these tragic events and their aftermath. On a bright September day, roughly a quarter-century ago, members of al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes departing from East Coast airports, transforming them into lethal, suicide weapons on a grand scale.

The perpetrators employed box cutters, which managed to evade security measures or, if detected, were permitted at the time. Two of the aircraft crashed into the Twin Towers of the original World Trade Center in New York City, inflicting extensive structural damage that ultimately resulted in their collapse. A third plane struck the Pentagon, causing considerable damage and igniting fierce fires.

The fourth aircraft, presumably destined for the Capitol or the White House, never reached its intended target before crashing into a field in Pennsylvania. The passengers aboard this plane, who recognized the impending danger, attempted to regain control. Regrettably, all individuals on board were killed. The death toll from the September 11 attacks amounted to nearly 3,000 lives lost.
