30 years after her death, Gilda embodies Argentina’s enduring faith in folk saints

Thirty years ago, on this Monday, a tour bus carrying Argentine cumbia singer Gilda crashed into a truck in CEIBAS, Argentina. The accident claimed the life of celebrity Miriam Alejandra Bianchi, who was only 34 years old. Despite her death, Gilda is now revered as a miracle-working folk saint in Argentina. At the site of the accident, fans gathered to pray, sing, and dance to her music.

The bus, now a memorial, is adorned with flowers, stuffed animals, candles, and handwritten prayers. Nearby, a chapel is filled with items associated with Gilda's devotees, such as wedding dresses, trophies, crutches, and police uniforms. Gilda's followers believe she answers their prayers and helps them overcome hardships, much like other Argentine folk saints who are not formally recognized by the Catholic Church.
