10 arrested for allegedly vandalising Abuja street lights, cables

Ten individuals have been apprehended by the FCT Police Command for allegedly damaging street lights and armored cables in various parts of Abuja. FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, announced this on Tuesday while presenting the suspects at the command. The arrests took place during separate operations conducted in Kubwa, Wuye, and the National Mosque area of the Federal Capital Territory.

Sanusi disclosed that the suspects were seized from various locations, including Bazango-Kubwa, the road between Magic Land and the National Stadium, and around the National Mosque. Recovered from the suspects were multiple armored cables and components of vandalized street lights. Initially, a police patrol team from the Kubwa Division spotted the offenders allegedly tampering with armored cables around 6 pm on September 2, 2026.

The Wuye Division arrested one Moses Luka while he was excavating armored cables along the road between Magic Land and the National Stadium. Additionally, a Wuse Division surveillance team apprehended four suspects, namely Musa Abdullahi, Suleiman Idris, Aliyu Isa, and Muhammed Abdulrahman, for allegedly cutting down a solar-powered street light to vandalize it and extract its parts.

Sanusi stated that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the remaining members of the syndicates, including those who receive stolen public infrastructure. The suspects are currently in police custody and will be charged to court following the completion of investigations. Sanusi praised the police teams for their vigilance and prompt response in safeguarding public infrastructure throughout the FCT.
