Zheng Qinwen erases another 5-0 deficit and beats Iga Swiatek to reach the US Open quarterfinals

New York (AP) - Zheng Qinwen displayed remarkable resilience, overcoming a 5-0 deficit in consecutive matches to re-enter the U.S. Open quarterfinals. The Chinese Olympic gold medalist defeated the No. 8 seed Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-3, marking the first time a qualifier has reached the final eight since Emma Raducanu won the title in 2021.

Despite dropping the first five games against Swiatek, the 2022 U.S. Open champion showed remarkable composure, fighting off two set points and avoiding another when Swiatek served at 5-3. Zheng, who was a quarterfinalist in 2023 and 2024, had to qualify for this year's tournament after undergoing elbow surgery. Raducanu's title in 2021 made Swiatek the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era.

Zheng will face either Naomi Osaka or Elena Rybakina in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, French Open champion Mirra Andreeva advanced with a win over Anastasia Potapova, setting up a match against either Coco Gauff or Iva Jovic.
