Zelensky receives message from Trump’s envoys that Russia Is “ready for talks”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, envoys from former President Donald Trump's administration, in Kyiv on Sunday. It marked their first visit to Ukraine since the start of Trump's second term. During the meeting, Zelensky received a message from Witkoff and Kushner that "the Russians are ready for talks."

However, despite expressing a willingness to discuss proposals for moving negotiations forward, Zelensky remained skeptical, citing Russia's recent actions on the battlefield and escalation of attacks as not indicating a readiness to compromise.

The U.S. envoys visited Moscow and Kyiv primarily to "unblock" the diplomatic process, but also brought "several new ideas." These discussions reportedly focused on potential de-escalation steps by Russia and Ukraine before and during the winter, including measures related to energy facilities, grain supplies, electricity facilities, and oil and gas exports. Zelensky acknowledged that Russia and Ukraine have differing interests in these matters.

When asked if the new U.S. approach foresees resuming negotiations and attempting to reach agreements to prevent a serious escalation during the winter, Zelensky stated that such an interpretation was "very close to the reality of these talks." He identified re-establishing negotiations as the primary goal, and the second objective as finding ways to make the upcoming winter different from previous ones, in order to bring the sides closer to peace.

Zelensky also mentioned that the United States supports a separate "winter package" for Ukraine, which would include assistance in air defense and the energy sector.
