Weija Dam spillage to resume September 9 as GWL orders residents to evacuate

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) announced it will resume water spillage at the Weija Dam starting Wednesday, September 9, 2026. This action comes as the dam's water level approaches 46 feet, according to the company. The water level has currently reached 45.2 feet, a result of heavy rains upstream and ongoing rainfall in the Densu River's catchment area.

The decision to resume spillage is a precautionary measure to protect the dam's stability. Consequently, all residents living downstream of the Weija Dam are being advised to evacuate the area. Authorities urge residents to stay vigilant, adhere to official evacuation instructions, and refrain from activities that could put them at risk.

Ghana Water Limited has reached out to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), local assemblies, traditional leaders, assembly members, resident associations, and other relevant stakeholders to prepare for the potential evacuation. Affected communities include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey, and neighboring areas.
