Version Control Second Coming

In early summer of 2005, Plastic SCM secured its first angel investor. Simultaneously, over a year prior, Linus Torvalds unveiled Git, a rival version control system. After more than a year of pitching investors, Torvalds' announcement reinforced the daunting challenge ahead. Unprecedented electricity returned to the industry only a few months ago, as two major forces converged: the need to accommodate a surge in commits due to agents and a sudden drive to replace GitHub.

These two forces, combined with advancements in version control technology, are set to usher in a new era, transforming software development and collaboration. A seasoned observer of the version control landscape, I have witnessed numerous contenders rise and fall, including Accurev, Team Foundation Server, Jazz, Serena, and others. The emergence of new players, seeking to challenge GitHub's dominance, signals an exciting transformation in the industry.
