Trump says Mexico is only good for ‘tamales and tomatoes.’ Trade data says otherwise

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that Mexico provides "nothing" to the United States beyond "hot tamales" and "tomatoes," suggesting that the nation could potentially cease trading with its southern neighbor. However, Trump clarified that he does not intend to terminate trade, emphasizing the strong relationship he holds with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico.

Trump's comments came in response to a social media post in which he threatened to "STOP TRADING WITH COUNTRIES WITH WHICH WE HAVE A DEFICIT," including Mexico, should the U.S. Federal Reserve not lower interest rates. The U.S. trade deficit with Mexico in 2025 amounted to over $195 billion.

Despite Trump's claims, trade between the two countries remains substantial. In July alone, Mexico exported goods worth $60.55 billion to the U.S., a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. Mexico's exports to the U.S. in the first seven months of 2026 reached $358.7 billion. This integration of the U.S. and Mexican economies contradicts Trump's assertion that Mexico offers no significant value to the United States.
