Trump says Bombardier must build in US to sell there

US President Donald Trump has announced that Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier will no longer be permitted to sell its products in the United States unless it begins manufacturing them within the country. The statement was made on the social media platform Truth Social. Trump accused Bombardier of producing subpar aircraft and criticized the Canadian company for treating the United States as a "piggybank."

This announcement is part of Trump's ongoing effort to compel foreign and domestic entities to manufacture more products within the US. This strategy has been a key component of his economic policies during his second term, including a significant increase in tariffs on various imported goods. The White House has not yet commented on how Trump would enforce this action or the specific measures he plans to take.

Bombardier already has a division specializing in defense products, with a factory in Kansas that produces planes for special mission purposes. Approximately half of the 5,100 aircraft currently owned by Bombardier's customers are located in the United States. The company has not yet responded to inquiries for comment. In January, Trump had threatened to revoke Bombardier's certification for its Global Express business jets and impose a 50% import tariff on all aircraft manufactured in Canada until the country's regulatory body approved several planes produced by the US competitor Gulfstream.

These actions did not materialize, but in September, Canada certified several Gulfstream planes. On September 1, Bombardier announced its acquisition of a Canadian factory from supplier Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which manufactures wings for the maker's Global 5500 and 6500 aircraft. In July, Bombardier reported a 6% increase in quarterly revenue to US$2.15 billion, driven by robust demand for after-market services.
