Trump mulls renaming New Mexico ‘New America’

U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed changing the name of the state of New Mexico to 'New America', according to a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday. The idea reportedly emerged from an online hoax that Trump later amplified. The state's governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, immediately dismissed the proposal, asserting that the state's name is not up for debate, as it has been 'ours since before the United States existed'.

The White House responded to Trump's suggestion by posting an altered image of the state's name with 'Mexico' crossed out and replaced with 'America'. Trump's proposal follows a series of controversial attempts to rename significant geographical features, including suggesting to rename the Strait of Hormuz as 'Trump Strait' following tensions with Iran.

In 2025, shortly after returning to the presidency, Trump also attempted to rename the Gulf of Mexico as 'Gulf of America', a move that was reportedly rejected by Mexico.
