Toto Wolff uneasy as Mercedes drivers fought at Monza: “That could have ended in disaster”

Formula One driver George Russell outpaced Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in second practice at the Italian Grand Prix on Friday at the fast-paced Monza circuit. Russell's lap time of 1:22.559 was just 0.120 seconds quicker than Leclerc's 1:23.008, putting the Mercedes contender at the top of the timesheet.

This swift lap serves as a clear indication of Russell's intent as he fights to overcome a 59-point deficit to championship leader Kimi Hamilton. Leclerc, who led the first practice session, confirmed that there is still work to be done for his Ferrari, but expressed satisfaction with the car's performance. Mercedes' Hamilton, who is set to start from the back of the grid due to engine penalties, acknowledged that the upgraded power unit is a step in the right direction but admitted that the car was still difficult to optimize for a complete lap.

McLaren's Lando Norris, who has secured two consecutive race wins, remained fourth fastest, while his teammate Oscar Piastri and Mercedes' Oscar Piastri occupied the fifth and sixth positions respectively. Norris highlighted the tight competition at the front of the grid, while acknowledging that McLaren needs to find more performance in the corners where they were previously expected to excel.

Ferrari, who won the last race in Monza with Leclerc in 2024, have brought an engine upgrade to the track, potentially giving them an advantage given the circuit's characteristics.
