This city is one of the world’s most important AI hubs. It’s not where you’d expect

Toronto, Canada stands as one of the world's most significant AI hubs, a fact that may come as a surprise to some. Geoffrey Hinton, a Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist, pioneered research in machine learning at the University of Toronto in the 1980s, a decade before his groundbreaking work revolutionized modern AI systems. Today, Hinton's legacy continues to shape the Canadian city's thriving AI ecosystem.

Technology giants such as Google, Nvidia, Meta and Microsoft, as well as numerous startups, have established offices or research labs in Toronto, just a short distance from the University of Toronto. Even non-technology firms are recognizing the city's AI expertise, with pharmaceutical company Sanofi recently investing nearly $300 million in a Toronto AI Center of Excellence.

Toronto now boasts the world's third-best tech talent market, trailing only San Francisco and Seattle, according to an annual CBRE analysis. This growth can be attributed to the city's prestigious educational institutions, like the University of Toronto, and public-private research institutes such as the Vector Institute, co-founded by Hinton to commercialize AI breakthroughs.

Nick Frosst, a Cohere co-founder and Radical Ventures co-founder, is among the many AI leaders who chose Toronto over Silicon Valley. Hinton credits the influx of young students to the city's fertile ground for AI research. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has now laid out a national AI strategy, dedicating more than $2 billion to research, education, and increasing AI adoption.

As trade tensions between the US and Canada escalate, Hinton emphasizes the importance of Canada's domestic tech investments, stating, "We liked it here." For many Toronto-based AI leaders, the city's unique blend of technology, arts, academics, and business communities makes it the ideal place to cultivate their innovative ideas.
