'The Odyssey' tops weekend box office for 5th week

Christopher Nolan's action-packed movie, The Odyssey, has been leading South Korea's box office for the fifth consecutive week, surpassing ten million admissions, as reported by the Korean Film Council on Monday. The film amassed an additional 698,395 admissions over the weekend, raising its total admissions to 10,027,997 as of Sunday, according to data released by the KOFIC.

The epic film, inspired by Homer's The Odyssey, follows the perilous journey home of Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), the Greek king of Ithaca, after the Trojan War. An ensemble cast includes Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya. Currently, The Odyssey ranks as the second most-watched film in South Korea this year and marks the 10th foreign film to achieve over ten million admissions in the country.

American films, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the horror film Obsession, also performed well, adding 146,678 and 138,442 admissions respectively during their first weekend in theaters. The Korean film Road to Gyeong-ju claimed the fourth spot, with 49,417 admissions in its debut weekend, while the family drama Portrait of a Family debuted at fifth with 40,840 tickets sold.

The Odyssey showed no signs of slowing down, accounting for 45.4 percent of ticket pre-sales as of 9 a.m. on Monday, according to KOFIC data. Upcoming releases The Assassin(s) and Intern accounted for 11.5 percent and 11 percent of all advance ticket sales, respectively.
