The Falklands pay tribute in London to the merchant seafarers who served in 1982

The Falkland Islands Government Representative, Richard Hyslop, paid tribute to merchant seafarers during the annual Merchant Navy Day service at Trinity Square Gardens in London. Joined by veterans of the South Atlantic Medal Association and Lord West of Spithead, a former First Sea Lord, Hyslop laid a wreath at the Falkland Islands Memorial, which marks the Merchant Navy's contributions. Chris Locke, a former Royal Fleet Auxiliary chief officer and Falkland Islands Marine Officer, was also present.

Hyslop emphasized the importance of remembering the service and sacrifice of merchant seafarers who defended the islands' freedom and right to self-determination during the 1982 conflict. He expressed gratitude to both past and present Merchant Navy personnel for their invaluable role in supporting the Falklands and enabling the islands to prosper.

The commemoration takes place on September 3, the date of the SS Athenia's sinking in 1939, marking the first British merchant vessel lost in World War II. The Red Ensign, the merchant navy's flag, represents over 90% of the UK's trade. During the 1982 conflict, the British Ministry of Defence requisitioned or chartered civilian vessels, including the liners Canberra and Queen Elizabeth 2, as troop transports.

The loss of the Atlantic Conveyor, a converted container ship struck by a missile, resulted in the sinking of twelve lives, including its master, Ian North, and the loss of heavy-lift helicopters intended for the land campaign. Maritime transport remains crucial to the Falkland Islands, relying on shipping for supplies and the export of its fisheries production, the main pillar of its economy.
