The Boox Picco could be a tiny rival to the Xteink X4 Pro ereader, but it lacks one of that product's best features

The Boox Picco, unveiled at IFA 2026, presents itself as a compact competitor to the Xteink X4 Pro ereader. However, unlike its rival, the Picco operates on a Linux-based operating system instead of Android, and does not feature magnets for attachment to devices. Despite these differences, the Picco does offer a USB-C port, an LCD touchscreen, physical page-turn buttons, a front light, and a microSD card slot, enabling various ways to load books onto the device.

While the Picco's software is claimed to be promising, with a reading stats page, a Pomodoro timer, and other built-in applications, the absence of Android may limit access to popular apps like Kindle and Kobo. Sideloaded books may also present compatibility issues due to DRM restrictions. On the positive side, the Picco's software simplicity and potential better battery life compared to Android-powered alternatives could be appealing factors.

Unlike the Xteink X4 Pro, the Boox Picco lacks magnets for attachment to phones, which may not be a significant concern for all users. However, the inclusion of a USB-C port contrasts with the Xteink's proprietary charging port, potentially giving the Picco an advantage over its competitor.
