Thai Airways cancels flights to Jakarta, volcanic eruption closes airports

Jakarta, September 7 — As volcanic ash from Anak Krakatau grounded flights across the region, seven stranded Malaysians found themselves without a place to stay and growing frustrated. Enter Maira Safiraa, an Indonesian currently residing in Malaysia, who opened her Jakarta home to the group after witnessing the flight chaos from afar.

Upon seeing the predicament, Maira contemplated, "What if I or my family were in the same situation in a foreign country?" Her compassion led her to offer her house, which is about 30 minutes from the airport, to the Malaysians. Three of her four bedrooms were quickly filled, with the last room remaining open for women traveling alone.

No payment is required, and the accommodation is completely free. The eruption of Anak Krakatau, which has been ongoing since Friday, has blanketed the region in ash and forced six airports to close their runways. Consequently, flights to numerous cities, including Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Sydney, Seoul, Doha, and Amsterdam, have been disrupted.

Maira is pleased that her home in Jakarta has become a vibrant hub with an influx of new residents, as her personal assistant now shares her living space. While the airport authorities predict disruptions will continue until at least 12:30 PM tomorrow, Maira's generosity has its limits. She empathizes with Indonesians stranded in Malaysia but lacks the space to accommodate them, given her household already includes her husband, baby, and helper.

For now, Maira's open door alleviates one significant concern for the seven Malaysians while they weather the ash cloud.
