Ten killed and dozens injured in Mexico fireworks blast

A pyrotechnic explosion during a religious festival in Temascalcingo, Mexico, resulted in at least 10 deaths and 64 injuries, according to Mexican authorities. The incident occurred on Saturday night near the Nuestra Senora de la Luz church, which is situated in Temascalcingo, a municipality with a population of 66,000 people. The explosion took place while hundreds of attendees were preparing to watch the fireworks display, a key part of the town's religious festival.

The town is located approximately 160 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, and the Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has launched an inquiry. Among the injured, two priests were reportedly among those affected. A video circulating on social media depicts the aftermath of the blast, showing dozens of people navigating through smoke and debris in search of survivors.

Explosions involving pyrotechnics are not uncommon in Mexico, where such devices are commonly used in both street celebrations and religious festivals. Just a few years ago, in 2020, a significant fireworks explosion in the village of Huejutla, in the central state of Hidalgo, left 17 individuals injured.
