Tanzanian President Samia's husband dies in hospital

The death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has sparked an outpouring of tributes from regional leaders. Hassan passed away on Monday at 08:00 local time at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, after battling a heart condition. Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi made the official announcement of his passing, extending condolences to the president, family, and friends.

President Hassan assumed the role of the nation's first First Gentleman following her husband's demise in 2021, succeeding the late John Magufuli. Hassan and Samia were married in 1978, before she entered politics. They had four children, including a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who is a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.

Regional heads of state, including Kenyan President William Ruto, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, and Burundi's President Evariste Ndayishimiye, swiftly expressed their condolences and solidarity with the Hassan family. They mourned the loss of a lifelong companion for Samia, a beloved father to her children, and a distinguished son to Tanzania.

The tributes have highlighted the shared cultural values of communal support across the East African community, ensuring that Hassan's legacy as a quiet academic and statesman is honored collectively.
