Taiwan sets up US-backed cyber unit to hunt hidden military threats

Taiwan's military is set to bolster its cyber defenses against potential threats from mainland China by establishing a new threat-hunting team and inviting foreign experts to provide advanced training. The Information, Communications and Electronic Force Command has proposed a budget allocation of NT$95.93 million (US$3.03 million) for the 2027 fiscal year to establish this dedicated unit.

This move marks an escalation in Taiwan's cyber capabilities as it intensifies cooperation with the United States. The team's primary focus will be on "proactive cyber threat hunting," moving beyond traditional defense measures like firewalls and post-attack remediation towards actively searching networks for hidden threats. While the origin of the foreign instructors remains undisclosed, media reports suggest they will primarily be from the United States, bringing with them expertise in realistic adversarial training akin to the US military's Cyber Flag exercises.
