‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ tops box office for sixth straight week

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has maintained its position at the top of North American box office sales for the sixth consecutive week, according to industry figures released on Sunday. The superhero film, starring Tom Holland and his real-life wife Zendaya, generated an additional US$18 million during the extended Labour Day weekend in the United States, marking a 20% decrease compared to the previous week's earnings.

Since its July 31 release, the Marvel blockbuster has amassed an impressive US$918 million in domestic and international box office revenue. In second place, Christopher Nolan's epic The Odyssey has brought in US$13 million over its eighth week in theaters, bringing its total domestic earnings to US$584.7 million. Looney Tunes animated/live-action film Coyote vs. Acme secured the third spot with US$11.3 million in revenue, having slipped from second place in its second week.

Originally shelved by Warner Bros. late in 2023 due to release delays, the movie was acquired by Ketchup Entertainment and released, receiving positive reviews and a strong start. In fourth place, By Any Means, a civil rights-era crime thriller directed by Mark Wahlberg and featuring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, earned US$7.4 million in its debut week.

The film, set in the deep south of the United States during the 1960s, has received mixed reviews from critics but has garnered a positive audience score. Sony Pictures' horror franchise entry, Insidious: Out of the Further, claimed the fifth spot with US$6.5 million in sales during its third week of release. Starring Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea, and Maisie Richardson-Sellers, the film follows a young woman with the ability to bring spirits into the mortal world, while being haunted by her own past.

Rounding out the top ten were CARS: 20th Anniversary, Buddy, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, The End of Oak Street, and The Dog Stars, with sales of US$6.1 million, US$5.7 million, US$3.3 million, US$2.9 million, and US$2.7 million respectively.
