Solomons PM survives attempt to oust government

Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale prevented a no-confidence vote against his leadership by adjourning parliament indefinitely on Monday. The political turmoil came as US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau visited the nation and pledged the return of the Peace Corps. Wale is currently reviewing a security pact with China, which has led to criticism from US and Australian allies.

Diplomats reported that Wale's survival would have security implications for the region, with several Pacific leaders avoiding a recent summit due to China's disapproval of Taiwan's presence. Wale's government is negotiating a new treaty with Australia, allowing US Coast Guard patrols and exploring US investment in a port development that China previously sought.

The no-confidence motion was withdrawn by its initiator, Manasseh Maelanga, who was subsequently removed as home affairs minister. Wale informed parliament that they aim to reconvene before Christmas to pass the budget, emphasizing the rapid pace of change in the nation. Australia's former high commissioner to the Solomons, James Batley, expressed relief at the government's steadiness following his election.
