After three years of detention, a fashion designer was acquitted of drug trafficking charges in Malaysia. In a Shah Alam High Court decision, the prosecution failed to prove prima facie against G Chelvan, 36, who had been imprisoned for over three years. The Director of Public Prosecutions Norhisham Ismail dismissed the case against Chelvan, stating that the prosecution could not establish the necessary elements to prove guilt.

Chelvan was arrested on March 3, 2023, after his identity was confirmed via fingerprints at a parked car containing 3,030.1 grams of methamphetamine on the beach at Morib. The drug, which could result in a death sentence or life imprisonment, as well as at least 12 canes if found guilty, was found in a canvas bag and a Laju Pos envelope located in the back of the vehicle.

Chelvan claimed he only had temporary access to the car, while his friend, Lavindran, entered the vehicle for about five to ten minutes before the police arrived. Chelvan was outside the car when the police arrived, and police officers searched the car using the keys found in his pocket. They discovered the drugs in a canvas bag and a Laju Pos envelope at the back of the car.

Chelvan told the police that the bag and envelope belonged to Lavindran and that he did not know they contained drugs. Lavindran was held for several hours based on information provided by Chelvan but was never charged, according to Chelvan's lawyer. No fingerprints, DNA, or CCTV evidence linked Chelvan to the drugs, leading Norhisham to order his release.

Deputy Prosecutor Shahrul Ekhsan Hasim represented the prosecution, while Chelvan's friend Lavinia Raja represented him.
