This step is not mandatory but serves to facilitate the foreign diplomatic missions' ability to assist Malaysians abroad in case of emergencies.

An example cited is the recent floods in Nepal, where information on Malaysian nationals was sourced only from their relatives and travel agencies. The e-Konsular system assists these missions in providing prompt aid. One can register via the website or by using the mobile application accessible through a QR code.

According to the official e-Konsular website, this registration aims to systematically monitor the locations of Malaysians overseas. The Foreign Ministry, or Wisma Putra, is committed to safeguarding the welfare of its citizens in all situations, including scenarios involving the death, detention, disappearance, or financial support needs of Malaysians abroad.

Some suggested emailing the Malaysian Embassy in case of application issues, while others emphasized that registration, though not mandatory, simplifies the process of dealing with authorities.
