Sea power is cornerstone of economic security

As military tensions between the United States and Iran escalate, global focus is once more drawn to the Strait of Hormuz. While conflicts in the Middle East are nothing new, this current standoff is particularly consequential for Korea. The country's very existence is intricately tied to this narrow waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz, spanning about 160 kilometers in length and constricting to roughly 50 kilometers at its narrowest point, connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. Remarkably, nearly 20 percent of the world's seaborne crude oil transits through this strategic chokepoint. A significant percentage of Korea's imported crude oil also passes through this vital route.

Korea is one of the world's leading economies, yet it remains a classic maritime trading nation. Approximately 99 percent of the country's trade volume is carried by sea. This dependence on overseas sources of energy and raw materials renders the economy highly vulnerable to disruptions in maritime traffic.

Any blockade or significant interference with shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz would have immediate and devastating effects on the Korean economy. The nation's economy is tightly interwoven with global trade, and any impediment to the flow of oil and other essential commodities would send shockwaves throughout its economic system.
