Satya Niketan Building Collapse: Sri Venkateswara College Closed Today, Offers Temporary Shelter To Students

Sri Venkateswara College at the University of Delhi is set to remain closed on Monday, September 7, in the wake of a building collapse in the Satya Niketan area the previous day. The college, situated opposite the incident site, has opened its doors to students lacking temporary accommodation, offering them safe shelter on campus.

This decision was made following the closure of PG facilities in the region due to the tragedy. On September 6, the administration issued a notice explaining the closure, emphasizing the need for student safety.

The building collapse claimed six lives so far, with at least five others injured. The owner of the building, Aditya Bansal, is facing charges of culpable homicide and negligence. According to reports, construction work was underway in the basement at the time of the collapse. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry and directed the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the building owner.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences, assuring that authorities were working at the site to aid the affected individuals.

In response to the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ordered the demolition of Building/House No. 13 in the vicinity, citing its hazardous condition. The civic body provided the owner with three days to comply with the order, citing the heightened danger it posed. College officials have advised students to seek alternative, safer accommodation while rescue and investigative efforts continue.
