Safety-turned-running back Sione Vaki set for increased role on offense

The Detroit Lions have three running backs on their current 51-man roster, with Dan Campbell indicating they intend to utilize all of them in the season opener against the New Orleans Saints on September 13. While Jahmyr Gibbs is set to be the Lions' primary offensive weapon, Campbell noted that Jacob Saylors and Sione Vaki will collaborate as backups.

Campbell expressed confidence that Vaki has gained ground as a running back and will also contribute as a pass protector and receiver. Though Vaki was sidelined during the preseason due to injuries, he participated extensively in practice, especially in Jacob Pacheco's absence. Saylors, with more running back experience, had 100 yards in the Lions' exhibition finale.

Campbell highlighted Vaki's readiness to assume more running back responsibilities and emphasized their value as special teams players. The Lions currently possess two roster vacancies, with Campbell hinting they have a clear plan for the upcoming match, but they may also consider promoting veterans from the practice squad or incorporating young players with guaranteed contracts.
