World No 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan defeated three-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-4 at the New York tournament on Monday. This victory puts Rybakina in the US Open quarter-finals for the first time in her career, setting up a clash with China's Zheng Qinwen. The Kazakhstan player, who also won the French Open title this year, added that reaching the semi-finals would grant her the top spot in the world rankings, even if Osaka secures her third consecutive US Open title.
