Robots protest in Poland over AI regulation concerns

Around 30 robots made their way through the streets of Warsaw on Monday, advocating for regulation of artificial intelligence before the Digital Affairs Ministry. Organized by the Democratism initiative, the demonstration aimed to spark conversation about the impact of AI and automation on the workforce.

Demonstrating the reality of current AI technology, one of the robots, Agibot A3, described to AFP how these machines already move about freely, participating in the protest. Repeated chants of "Defend workplaces," "Time for rules," and "Don't wait, regulate" echoed through the city as the diverse group of robots, ranging from humanoid figures to dog-like quadrupeds, showcased their capabilities.

Grzegorz Kulis, the initiative's organiser, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that if no action is taken, a looming problem could arise with humanoid robots and AI taking over cognitive work. He stressed the need for regulations to shield workers from potential replacement.

Poland's Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski paid the robots a visit, expressing concern over uncontrolled AI models implemented into humanoid robots that will continue to evolve. The marching robots brought attention to the rapid technological changes that frighten society and are being addressed through the implementation of the EU's AI Act, which created a national authority to enforce existing regulations.
