Prosecutor General Kravchenko resigns

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko announced his resignation on Monday evening, September 7th, shortly after the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) conducted a raid on his office. In a Telegram statement, Kravchenko attributed his decision to a "political decision" made "consciously." He expressed his stance against using the prosecutor general's position for political confrontation and reiterated his position on the NABU accusations.

Kravchenko also thanked his colleagues who "honestly perform their duties," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the Ukrainian parliament (Verkhovna Rada). According to Ukrainska Pravda, Zelenskyy had reportedly met with Kravchenko and David Arakhamia, chairman of the Servant of the People party, to discuss the future of Kravchenko's position.

Earlier that day, Kravchenko had stated that he would only resign if his colleagues, Zelenskyy, and parliament requested it. On September 4th, NABU announced a special operation to uncover a criminal organization allegedly led by an employee of the Prosecutor General's Office. Sources cited by Ukrainska Pravda stated that NABU and the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) detained Serhii Kropyva, the head of the Prosecutor General's Office's cyber department, possibly involved in protecting a network of scam call centers from law enforcement.
