PM Koretskyi urges Kyiv to refine new air raid alerts as public transit seizes up

Ukrainian Prime Minister Sergii Koretskyi convened an emergency session with Cabinet ministers and Kyiv officials on Monday evening, September 7, to address a growing public transit crisis in the capital city. In a Telegram post, Koretskyi ordered officials to guarantee metro operations align with government directives, ensuring citizens can travel home without hindrance.

He firmly stated that there is no justification for delaying these measures. Koretskyi highlighted that traffic congestion, long lines, and crowded transportation stops do not enhance safety or comfort. The prime minister emphasized the need for swift implementation, considering the current city situation. He anticipated an immediate response from Kyiv authorities.

Earlier reports on local Telegram channels indicated another transit issue in Kyiv during an air raid alert on September 7. Crowds reportedly amassed near the Zvirynets metro station, struggling to board overcrowded public transport. Since September 6, Kyiv has employed a differentiated warning system for air threats, following a Cabinet decision.

Now, residents receive alerts for a yellow threat level, warning of drone danger, and a red threat level, signaling potential mass drone attacks, missile strikes, or a combination of missile and drone attacks. On the evening of September 7, around 8:00 p.m., a red-level air raid alert was triggered for Kyiv, signaling incoming enemy cruise missiles despite the bombers still being hours away from launching.

The alert appeared to be activated prematurely, as Russian strategic bombers took off from their airfields before posing an immediate threat to Ukrainian cities.
