Panama Canal postpones implementation of lower draft limits on Gatun Lake levels, weather projections

The Panama Canal Authority (PCA) has postponed the implementation of reduced draft limits for ships navigating the waterway by one week and a subsequent lowering by a month, according to current Gatun Lake water levels and weather projections. The PCA initially planned to lower the draft limits at its neopanamax locks to 48ft (14.6m) starting August 26.

However, the decision was pushed back until September 2. The maximum authorized draft adjustment of 47.5ft, originally set to take effect on September 3, will now be postponed until October 1. These changes have been made due to the intensification of El Nino, a climate pattern that results in warmer-than-normal water in the eastern and central tropical Pacific Ocean.

This warmer water can cause increased vertical wind shear, which is detrimental for hurricane formation and intensification. El Nino can also lead to reduced rainfall around Panama, contributing to lower water levels in Gatun Lake. The PCA will try to provide as much advance notice as possible for any future adjustments, although the timing will depend on changing conditions and updated information.
