One dead, six rescued after canoe accident on Volta Lake at Yeji

A tragic accident occurred on Sunday, September 6, 2026, on the Volta Lake near Isaka Kura, a suburb of Yeji in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region. The incident claimed one life and left six others injured. Six individuals, including the canoe operator and a cow, were aboard the vessel when the accident took place. The canoe was en route from Isaka Kura to Tonka and Yeji.

The operator, identified as Promise, recounted that the group had departed Isaka Kura towards Tonka and Yeji when an unforeseen event unfolded. The cow inside the canoe began to struggle, causing panic among the passengers. Two individuals, including a 21-year-old named Mathias Kpodovia, reacted by jumping into the lake in an attempt to escape the commotion.

Mathias Kpodovia, unfortunately, did not survive the incident. Promise immediately alerted nearby community members, who quickly formed a search party to locate the missing passenger. After several hours of extensive searching, Mathias Kpodovia's body was recovered from the lake. The deceased was subsequently transported to Matthias Hospital for a thorough investigation.
