Nepal tunnel rescues face 'unprecedented' challenge

Nepal's catastrophic flood disaster, triggered by a glacial and mountain collapse on the China-Nepal border, has presented an unprecedented challenge according to Australian rescue expert Arnold Dix. This occurred on August 26th, resulting in at least 1,385 deaths and over 5,500 people still missing in both countries.

Dix, president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, declared that the situation they are facing is like nothing he has encountered before. He highlighted that multiple potential rescues are occurring simultaneously in different locations, each presenting its own unique dangers and uncertainties.

Nepal is observing a national day of mourning in accordance with traditional Hindu rituals, yet rescue operations persist with the same intensity as the initial day. Raja Ram Basnet, a spokesman for the Nepal Army, emphasized that their efforts are focused on three levels - ground search, aerial searches, and tunnel rescues, to ensure no one remains stranded.

The rescue of three workers from deep within tunnels, including two Nepalis on Friday and a Chinese man on Saturday, has provided a glimmer of hope. Foreign experts, including those from China, India, and South Korea, are collaborating with Nepali teams in this monumental rescue operation. Among these foreign experts is Dix, who played a crucial role in the Indian rescue mission where 41 men were trapped for 17 days inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand state back in 2023.

Dix, who advises during such rescue missions, advised that they are not only measured by the lives they save but also by the lives they refuse to abandon. This sentiment echoes his experiences from past rescue operations, emphasizing their commitment to saving as many lives as possible.
