Nepal holds day of mourning for more than 1,300 killed in floods

Nepal observed a day of mourning to honor over 1,300 lives lost in devastating floods earlier this month. Government offices nationwide, along with missions overseas, lowered their flags to half-mast on Monday, marking the 13th day of mourning. In Hindu tradition, this final day signifies the conclusion of the mourning period, with close family members remaining indoors, and relatives gathering to pay their respects.

No major events were planned for this day, as search teams are still actively seeking survivors and resources remain scarce. Phanindra Paudel from the National Emergency Operation Center (NEOC) informed Reuters that there are no organized government programs at this time, as the rescue and search operations continue in areas affected by the floods.

The floods were triggered by a massive wall of mud and rock, which disintegrated following the dislodging of a glacier along Nepal's Himalayan border with China's Tibet region on August 26. The disaster resulted in at least 1,380 deaths and left more than 5,500 people missing. President Ram Chandra Paudel, the country's ceremonial head of state, visited flood-affected regions on Monday and was scheduled to assess the damage caused by the calamity.
