Mumbai Suburban Rail Network Set For Major Expansion Under Proposed MUTP-IV Plan

Mumbai's suburban railway network could undergo significant expansion under the proposed MUTP-IV Phase 4 plan. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) has launched a technical assistance study to assess the infrastructure needs to meet future travel demand and ensure a safer, higher-capacity commuter experience. The study will evaluate the requirements for new corridors, additional tracks, station enhancements, and safety measures to accommodate the growing urban population in Mumbai and its surrounding areas.

The research will focus on future travel demand for 2030, 2035, 2040, and 2047, taking into account the Updated Comprehensive Transport Study (CTS) 2021 and other ongoing transport projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Key factors include the impact of emerging urban growth centers like Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) and Mumbai 3.0/Karnala-Sai-Chirner (KSC) New Town.

The plan will also prioritize system upgrades, such as Kavach 5.0 and improved signalling, as well as additional air-conditioned electric multiple units (EMUs) and power supply augmentation. Passenger safety will be a central focus of the study, with the goal of achieving "Mission Zero Death" by addressing passenger death and injury data, trespassing incidents, and enhancing station accessibility through measures like platform widening, additional foot overbridges, and escalators.

MRVC's chairman, Vilas Sopan Wadekar, emphasized the corporation's commitment to creating a safer, higher-capacity, and commuter-centric suburban railway system, including plans for additional corridors, all air-conditioned rakes, and improved station accessibility.
