More than 1,000 open burning cases recorded in Pahang this year

Pahang has seen a substantial rise in open burning incidents this year, with 1,003 cases reported in the first eight months compared to 658 during the same period last year, according to the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department. The department's director, Datuk Mohd Razam Taja Rahim, revealed that the affected land area stands at 2,721.88ha, more than double the 1,162.83ha recorded last year.

The majority of these cases, 619, involved bush and grass fires, which are especially concerning in dry areas with overgrown bushes that can easily ignite. Razam Taja emphasized the importance of public vigilance, urging people to avoid open burning, particularly of rubbish, dry leaves, overgrown bushes, or agricultural waste during dry conditions. He stressed that even a small fire can quickly escalate into a larger blaze under these circumstances.

Razam Taja also warned against negligence, such as discarding cigarette butts, leaving burning embers unattended, or using fire sources near dry vegetation. He cautioned that such actions could trigger fires, spreading them to neighboring areas, farms, forests, or homes. Even seemingly minor negligence can have serious repercussions for safety, property, and the environment, he cautioned.

The department's warning underscores the critical need for responsible behavior, especially during dry spells, to prevent the spread of fires and mitigate potential harm.
