Minority calls for itemised bill on GH¢49.7 million South Africa evacuation expenditure

The Minority in Ghana's Parliament has urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide a detailed breakdown of the GH¢49.7 million spent on evacuating Ghanaians from South Africa. Ranking Member Samuel Abu Jinapor emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the use of public funds. The Ministry revealed the total expenditure, but Jinapor stressed that an itemized bill is crucial for understanding how the funds were utilized.

According to the Minister, GH¢38,835,512 was spent on flights, tickets, transportation, food, accommodation, medical care, and hospitalization in South Africa. However, Jinapor highlighted that this amounts to approximately GH¢25,000 per evacuee, making it essential for the Ministry to publish detailed expenditure information. The Minority has already initiated legal steps under the Right to Information Act to obtain the detailed breakdown, which they consider part of their ongoing efforts to ensure accountability over the evacuation exercise.
