Mayor of Accra directs Accra traders to sweep surroundings every hour

Accra's Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has instructed traders in the Central Business District (CBD) to clear their immediate surroundings once every hour to maintain cleanliness in the capital. This directive was issued to ensure that the progress made during the monthly National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise is preserved throughout the month.

During a visit to inspect the September NSD exercise on Saturday, September 5, 2026, Allotey joined the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, on an assessment tour starting at the Kinbu Traffic Light and progressing through Tudu and other main streets within Accra. The inspection aimed to evaluate traders' and businesses' adherence to sanitation standards while motivating them to uphold the cleanliness they had achieved.

Speaking to traders at Tudu, Allotey emphasized that the NSD initiative would continue beyond the first Saturday of each month, stressing that keeping Accra clean should extend beyond the monthly exercise. He urged traders to assume responsibility for the cleanliness of their operating areas by sweeping regularly and disposing of litter throughout the day.

Allotey argued that sweeping the streets hourly would prevent waste from piling up in the bustling commercial district, ultimately contributing to a cleaner and healthier Accra. He also encouraged businesses and residents to adopt daily cleaning as a regular responsibility, rather than depending solely on periodic sanitation exercises.
