Mammootty turns 75: Fans celebrate an icon whose passion for cinema never fades

Renowned Malayalam actor Mammootty celebrated his 75th birthday on Monday, September 7, 2026, with fans paying tribute to his five-decade-long journey in Indian cinema. The celebrated actor announced the title and first look poster of his upcoming film Mela directed by Nithish Sahadev. Wearing a black dhoti and shirt, the character poster hints at a thrilling action-packed movie.

Mammootty's film Mela shares its title with the late K.G. George's critically-acclaimed movie from 1980, in which the actor also starred in an early career role. A day earlier, Mammootty released the character poster for another film, Om – Chapter 1, directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, featuring Dhanush as the lead actor. At his residence in Kochi, hundreds of fans gathered on Sunday night to celebrate his birthday, distributing cakes and wishing the actor well-being.

Actor and MLA Ramesh Pisharody commended Mammootty for adapting to changing times through various roles in his career, while Keralam Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan hailed him as the pride of Malayalam. With three Rajat Kamal awards for Best Actor, Mammootty's recent win at the 2026 festival for his chilling portrayal in Bramayugam directed by Rahul Sadasivan marks a special year in his career.
